Strengthening organisational capacities of producers

Organic crops monitoring system

Until 2006, the control and management of the association were carried out by 2 technicians from Enda-Pronat who have been supporting the Federation since its founding.

However, taking into account the increasing number of producers (about 100 in 2005, 600 in 2006, 1200 in 2007) and the need for autonomy expressed by the Federation, a new monitoring process was adopted.

This is based on the idea that producers monitor themselves. From now on, in each village, a coordinator is chosen among the producers to monitor the organic plots. He is in turn monitored by a union supervisor (regrouping of several villages) and, at the head of the Federation, a team supervises all of the unions (12 in 2007).

Functional literacy programme in local languages

This programme involves 12 classes of 30 students (1 per union), including illiterate male and women farmers (from Manding and Peul tribes) from the Federation.

It is based on illustrated documents in local languages (syllabary for year 1), specially developed for the Federation on themes regarding organic agriculture and fair trade.

In November 2007, the programme coordinator recruited 12 trainers among the Federation’s farmers who already had some experience of literacy.

In the same period, the villagers built provisional classrooms for the students. The lessons began in December 2007, for a period of 6 consecutive months, at a rhythm of 3 hours a day 3 times a week.
